If you often read my posts on this blog, you have read a lot about work-life balance. Often, I discuss ways for attorneys to balance their careers and ambition with family and leisure activities, but there is also a third component that we often skip when discussing work-life balance: finding time to do good for others.

At Total Attorneys, we find time for philanthropy by weaving it in with both our work and our play. At work, we use SCRUM to help organize our efforts with the Total Impact House and other charities, and outside of work, we play games and showcase our other talents to have fun and help others.

Last weekend, we held our annual Total Impact Talent Show at the Store in Chicago to raise money for Chicago Youth Centers. This event gave us the opportunity to show off a few of our non-work-related talents while enjoying refreshments and raising money for a good cause. We had a raffle, open bar with wristbands and six musical acts that played everything from folk and acoustical sets to full-piece punk and rock acts.

The photo collage above is just a sample of what you missed (from left to right, top to bottom): Rick LaCour (Acting Director of Quality Assurance, Project Manager) and Vamsi Nadimpalli (Senior Developer) as That’s a Good Point; Jo Beth Harris (Consumer Advocate) and her husband, Robert Harrison, as Harris-n-Harrison, performing their rendition of Heart’s Barracuda; Adam Mikolaj (Database Administrator Development Team Support) and Steve Robison (Senior Designer) performed a few originals written by Steve; Billy Kenefick (Affiliate Sales Associate) and Chris Kramer (Content Writer) cheered for other performers just before their bands, Bully in the Hallway and Slushy took the stage.

What are other ways we can have fun and incorporate philanthropy at work and in our everyday lives? What are ways your law firm can encourage attorneys and other staff to volunteer or give back to the community?
